Viste cuando no queres ver a X persona, evitas lugares comunes, caminar cuadras de más solamente para no pasar al frente de un bar donde una vez lo viste, cambias tus horarios para no cruzarte en el camino de vuelta a casa. Bueno yo (aunque nunca llegue a los extremos anteriores) tengo tan pero tan mala suerte que lo más probable es que todo esfuerzo sea en vano.
Así fue masomenos lo que me pasó. Era domingo, el viento me había dejado el pelo como un nido de pájaros y como había salido a las corridas, manoteé el primer abrigo que encontré: una campera ENORME de mi viejo. Ya se pueden dar una idea de lo que era yo.
Entré a la panadería, sin molestarme por acomodarme las mechas que se me cruzaban para todos lados y ví a una persona agachada sobre las bandejas de facturas a mi costado. No llegue (ni necesite) verlo mucho, los jeans gastados… esas zapatillas…el sweater rayado… fueron más que suficientes para paralizarme en la puerta como si me hubiesen hecho unos bloques de cemento en los pies y estuviese esperando que me tiren al fondo del río.
La vendedora, que me miraba con curiosidad desde el mostrador. Se pensó seguro que era medio retardada porque estuve un par de minutos tratando de aclararme la cabeza para acordarme qué era lo que hacía ahí.
Sin mirar directamente o como dirían los libros, por el rabillo del ojo, ví que se incorporaba y acercaba hacia la balanza que tenía justo al frente mío. Mientras, después de preguntar dos veces cuanto era, yo intentaba disimular el temblor de mis manos y sacar la plata del maldito bolsillo del jean. En realidad, lo único que quería era salir corriendo de ahí y no volver nunca más a ese lugar horrible.
Como me demoré bastante, la vendedora ya cansada de mí, se volvió hacia él. Se me hizo un nudo en el estomago, no pude respirar por un instante esperando la respuesta. Y ahí fue cuando una voz totalmente desconocida contestó.
El dicho es cierto, fue como si el alma me volviera al cuerpo. Incluso casi me largo a reír aunque me sentí estúpida como pocas veces. De todas formas y por si las dudas, me apuré a pagar y salí disparada del local. Definitivamente, me faltan 5 para el peso… y nunca más voy a volver a esa panadería.

There are times when you don’t want to see THAT person, you avoid common places, walk extra blocks just not to pass in front of a bar you’ve once seen him, change your scheduled not to see him on the way back home. Well, (even though I’ve never got to the previous extremes) I have such a bad luck that the most likely to happen is that all effort was in vain.
That’s how it was, sort of. It was Sunday, it was really windy so my hair looked like a bird nest and as I went out very quickly, I caught the first coat I found on my way: a HUGE old jacket from my dad. You can now get an idea of how I looked like...
I got into the bakery store, without minding on put back on place my hair and I saw someone bended over the croissants on my side. I didn’t get (or needed) to see him too much, the faded jeans... those old Converses... the striped sweater... were enough to paralyzed me at the door as if I had concrete blocks on my feet and were waiting to be thrown to the bottom of the river.
The shop assistant, that looked at me from behind the counter, must have thought I was a retarded or something because I stand there for a couple of minutes trying to clear my mind to remind what I came to buy.
Looking out of the corner of my eye, I saw he stand up and walk towards the scale that was just in front of me. In the meantime, after asking twice how much it was, I tried to hide the shaking of my hands and get the money out of my bloody pocket. Actually, the only thing I wanted to was to run out of there and never came back.
As I took my time, the woman, probably a bit tired of my weird behavior, turned towards him. I could felt a knot on my stomach, for an instant I stopped breathing waiting for the answer, waiting to hear his voice, that voice that gave me so much joy but also a lot of sadness.
And that was when a completely unknown voice answered. I know it’s a cliché but I swear it was like I had my soul back. I even almost started laughing; I’ve never felt so stupid. Anyway and just in case, I payed quickly and disappeared. Definitely, I’m not ok and I’ll never put a foot back on that bakery store ever again.
